This article aims to describe the professionalization of ulama in the classical Islamic education system. The study was carried out by library research with a qualitative-rationalistic approach. The primary sources used are literature that discusses the history of Islamic education and the theory of Islamic education, while secondary sources are dictionaries and books of tafsir. The results of the study are: first, ulama are a group of intellectuals who inherit the baton of leadership of the Prophet (peace be upon him) in upholding the word of Allah on earth. They have a very strategic role in the midst of human life, both as problem solvers for various problems that arise in society and as oral connectors of the Prophet in upholding the right and tearing down the vanity in accordance with the commandments of Allah and His Messenger. Second, as a profession, ulama do not solely base all their activities on material orientation, but they do so because of the divine consciousness that is always devoted to Allah Almighty. In classical Islam, they were a group that received high esteem from rulers and society because of their scholarship and dedication, both in the fields of education, politics, law, economics, social and culture. The government pays high attention to them, so that almost all their living needs are guaranteed.
